MythBusting 101

One of my favorite shows is MythBusters.  If you have never seen it, the premise of the show is to either confirm or bust a myth.  The people on the show are professional stunt men and very smart math people (I don’t know what else to call them).  In the last 2 weeks they have confirmed two events that I thought were myths…sharks will inherently swim away from dolphins and it’s impossible to do a 360 degree flip on a swing set.  Kind of interesting – or I’m really strange.

Looking back at 2007, I feel like doing some MythBusting Southside style.  When a church takes a step to improve areas many ideas, thoughts and at times rumors run wild.  Here are some of the situations we faced in 2007 and I will “confirm the myth” or “bust it.”

1.    During one service 500 got up and left mad - myth

2.      We don’t provide Sunday School for children – myth

3.      We stopped Sunday School for adults – myth

4.      We are hiring a Children’s Pastor – confirmed

5.      Charlie is becoming an XBOX addict – confirmed

6.      Billy has starting listening to country music – total myth

7.      Dennis won the Fantasy Football Staff League – confirmed

8.      Randall attended too many UGA games this year – confirmed

9.      Josh has been playing online video games with youth and calling it “ministry” – confirmed

10.   Jim loves waking up at 3am to feed his new son – myth

11.   Dennis sang and danced to “My Girl” during the fall leadership conference – confirmed

12.   Bryan was seen shopping at Target’s clearance section EARLY the day after Christmas – confirmed.

13.   Pastor owes the staff a lunch due to losing on a “certain” bet – confirmed

14.   Over 70% of Southside’s new member this year had either no or limited church background – confirmed.

15.   Our Senior Adults are some of the coolest people you will ever meet – confirmed

16.   2008 is going to be an amazing year at Southside – confirmed

One thing that is not a myth is the fact we are full steam ahead in Loving God, Loving People & Loving the World on the Journey to Life Change.
