9 to 5 (Part 1)

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

We thought it would be fun to give everyone a “behind the scenes” exclusive into what our pastor’s offices actually look like, so for the next couple of days, that is exactly what you can expect to find on this blog.  We thought we’d go ahead and start right at the top.  Here is Pastor Jerry’s office with a couple of accompanying observations.

Our pastor’s shrine to all things Alabama.

There are more pictures of “Bear” Bryant than anyone else in this office, including his grandkids.

You know you’re a grandparent, when you put silly stuff like this in your office!

We Are Family

Monday, September 17th, 2007

I know this may be a little egocentric, but I (Matt) thought I’d post a picture of my family and show them off.  I’m the tall, balding one, but if you’re a part of Southside, you probably already knew that.  The beautiful brunette is my wife, Robin.  We’ve been married for 10 years this past August.

Micah is the oldest of my four children.  He loves to read, play basketball, and beat his Dad in Super Mario Baseball.  Kenzie is a beautiful 6 year old girl who loves Pop-Tarts, and watching Hanna Montana.  Brody is my crazy child.  He is entirely unlike Micah or Kenzie.  He’s almost three now and has been waking up lately singing, “We Will Rock You”.  Like I said, he’s crazy.  Kassidy is the newest member of the Walls family and is absolutely adorable.  She is three months old and loves to smile at and spit up on her Dad.

Anyway, excuse my bragging.  I’ll try to talk about something church related tomorrow.

Celebration

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

If you’ve been reading this blog, you know that one of our core values here at Southside is “Celebrating Life Change”.  Recently, Kevin and Micki Torres, demonstrated this value in an unbelievably cool way in our college ministry.  This past Sunday morning, one of our college students (Teddy) made the decision to give his life to Christ.  Kevin and Micki saw this as an opportunity to celebrate and boy, did they!  At their life group later that evening, they broke out the Welch’s Sparkling Grape Juice, played the song, “Celebrate”, and made sure that Teddy was on the receiving end of a whole lot of celebratory hugs.

Anyway, I just thought that was an incredible example of “celebrating life change”, and I had to share it.  But more than that, it got me thinking.  What are some other creative ways to celebrate a changed life?  What are some other ways we can make a big deal out of someone giving their life to Christ?

We would love to hear some feedback on this, so send us your brilliant thoughts and comments.

Oh, and by the way, here are a few pics of some of our college students making a big deal out of Teddy’s decision.  (And remember, they’re drinking Welch’s!!)

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

We’ve spent a lot of time on this blog commenting on this year’s edition of the Leadership Conference, and I’m certain that most of you will be glad when we move on to something else.  With that said, here is one last post.  We thought that some of you with lots of time on your hands, might actually want to watch the main session, so if that’s you, check those videos out right here!

Unbelievable

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

I know we’re several weeks removed now, but I want to say one more time that if you couldn’t make it to our Leadership Conference, then you really missed it!  It was unbelievable!

Anyway, I want to wrap up our comments on the Leadership Conference by giving you the highlights from our final session.  As we did with each of the other sessions, we introduced Session 4 with one last entertaining video.  (By the way, Matt pulls off a whiny Luke Skywalker exceptionally well!)

Immediately after the introductory video, Pastor Jerry introduced the topic of the final session:  Mission Measures.  Mission measures are the attributes or characteristics of an individual’s life that define or reflect the achievement of the mission.  That’s sort of a technical way of saying that there are certain things that are obvious in people’s lives that let us know that they are living out the mission of the church.

Anyway, this session was tag teamed by Pastor Jerry and Matt.  And the following are some of the main thoughts from this session.

*We’ll know someone is living out the mission statement when they are…

Celebrating God in Worship

In other words, we’ll know that the individual members in our church are living out the mission statement when they are expressing love to God on a daily basis.  We express love to God on a daily basis more specifically by”:  making every day of the week about our Heavenly Father and not just Sunday, participating in (not just attending) the worship service, and engaging other more obvious expressions of worship.

Helping Others Know Christ

We’ll know spiritual maturity is happening in people’s lives when they are understanding their responsibility to share the Gospel.  This is evident when people are inviting others to our worship services and special events, investing in relationships with those who don’t know Christ, and ultimately influencing them to choose Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Adopting Spiritual Practices

It’s also obvious that growth is taking place in someone’s life when they are participating regularly in habits that will draw them closer to Christ.  These practices include reading, reflecting on, and memorizing Scripture, talking and listening to God through prayer, confessing your sins to God and at least one other person, and other spiritual practices/disciplines.

Navigating Life with Biblical Wisdom

We believe that when people “get the mission statement”, they will begin applying biblical truth in their daily decision making.  This becomes apparent when people are looking to God as the source of wisdom, regularly asking, “What is the wise thing to do?”, and surrounding themselves with other wise people.

Giving Of Themselves and Their Resources

Another way of saying this is that we’ll know that the individual members in our church are living out the mission statement when they are refusing to be selfish with their time, talents, and treasure.  This is especially evident when someone is tithing on the first part of their income and not just giving what they have left over at the end of the month, as well as when they are bearing fruit and finding fulfillment through regular ministry

Experiencing Meaningful Community

We believe that every serious Christ follower will make connecting intimately with other Christians a priority in their lives.  We think that true community is obvious when accountability is happening on a consistent basis, people are on the giving and receiving ends of genuine care, and homes are open and meals are shared.

This is How We Do It

Monday, September 10th, 2007

The 3rd session of the Fall Leadership conference was about Strategy.  One of the things that Billy said during the strategy was “the difference between church A and church B is strategy, because every church has the same mission.”  We have revisited our church strategy over a year ago and below are some of the notes that were talked about.  By the way the intro video was very funny.

What is it?

·        Strategy – A long term plan of action designed to achieve a goal

·        A Ministry Strategy – leading people with an end in mind.

Why is it Important?

·        When a church is not intentional, they will naturally fault into what’s most easy / benefits them.

·        We are to be strategic, because with church it’s a matter of eternity.

How Did We Develop Our Strategy?

Should we be driven by programs as a church?

·        When we think of programs, we tend to create something in order to meet specific needs that have surfaced in your attendee base or target group.

·        When we think of steps the primary goal is not to meet someone’s need, but rather to help someone get where they need to be.

·        We decided that our ministries need to become a step to lead someone somewhere spiritually.

What is Our Strategy?

·        To Love God through Worship

o   It should be the best 70 minutes of the week

·        To Love God through Life Groups

o   Discipleship is about knowledge and action

·        To Love God through Service

o   Serving organizationally at church & serving others by sharing your faith.
